And so to the last game of 2022. The NWWCC Flames won the toss and Captain for the day, Lily McGonigal, opted to bowl. And they got off to a rip-roaring start, having St Albans at 31/4 after just 6 overs. Summer Karras and India Buchanan both bowled one of the openers each, with India following up with a sensational run out and another clean bowled wicket! Summer managed to get a long-range run out too, before Isla and Ella from St Albans put together a 75-run partnership.
However, the Flames kept at it and were eventually rewarded with a wicket (another clean bowled) from Grace Darnbrough. Mookee Lee drew the 7th wicket into a false shot, with the catch being taken by none other than India. St Albans eventually made a very creditable 197/7 from 30 overs. With the day really starting to heat up, the Flames started their batting with a hiss and a roar. After losing an early wicket, Summer and Jesse D’Arcy-Slade smashed the ball to all parts of the ground during a very exciting partnership, taking the score to 80/1 after 10 overs. Jesse was eventually dismissed for 28, while Summer just missed out on her half-century, being bowled for 46.
At the halfway point, the Flames were 111/4, with the game very much in the balance. Unfortunately, the St Albans bowlers had other ideas, managing to bowl the girls out for 120. In the end it was another commendable performance from the NWWCC Flames, particularly in the very hot conditions, against a very well-drilled St Albans team. Player of the Day was Summer Karras for her all-round contribution, but especially her batting display. She certainly kept the Flames in the game for a long time.
Time for a break now; the girls will be back on action on Saturday 28 January 2023. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy & Safe New Year, from the Under 16 Flames. Ka kite.
