The NWWCC Flames Under 16 squad got a very nice surprise mid-week – we were going to be playing Sydenham on Hagley Oval! Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas and we had to move to the Polo Grounds instead. Gutted… Anyway, Captain for the day, Luce Dawson, lost the toss and we were asked to field. Millie Camm-Rule got an early wicket, clean bowling one of the Sydenham openers in her first over! Then we picked up a Caught Behind to Luce, off the bowling of Jesse D’Arcy-Slade, to have them at 39/2 off 4 overs.
Things went Sydenham’s way for a while after that, with the addition of 148 runs before they lost another wicket. In the meantime, Bienna retired on 51 Not Out, having hit a number of fours and a towering six. Millie effected an excellent runout at the non-striker’s end to claim another wicket, but Sydenham ended up with 190/4 from their 30 overs. The NWWCC Flames struggled to get underway under leaden skies; we lost wickets at regular intervals, to be 29/3 after six overs. Jesse came to the rescue somewhat, smacking a quick-fire 31.
Meanwhile, Grace Darnbrough, Makayla Capon, and Lily McGonigal all batted for a decent period each, scoring slowly but surely along the way. Lily, in particular, stayed at the crease for some time, extending our innings for quite a while. Her solid knock earning her Player of the Day. We ended up being bowled out for 114 in the 23rd over, which gave Sydenham a well-deserved win.
