NWWC U16 Flames Saturday 25/03/23

And so to the last match of the ‘22/’23 season, versus OBC, at Nunweek Park.  The day was sunny to start, but the grass and (uncovered) pitch were very wet.  Captain for the Day, Phoebe D’Arcy-Slade, won the toss – for the first time in ages! – and we elected to field.  Summer Karras broke through early, nicely bowling one of OBC’s openers, and we had them 4/1 at the end of the first over.

Then there were a number of small partnerships, punctuated by some great bowling by our girls, culminating in a score of 127 all out for OBC and a wicket each (all clean bowled) for Lily McGonigal, India Buchanan, Lily Weeds, and Luce Dawson.  Plus, Mille Camm-Rule picked up the team’s best bowling figures of the season with 3/16 from her three overs – again, all clean bowled.  So all eight wickets were bowled today: a rare feat indeed!

The Flames started well, with Phoebe cracking a quick-fire 10, and Luce hanging around for a good, long stretch of 20 from 41 balls.  India chipped in with a well compiled 12, Ariana showed some form by batting for 23 balls for her 1, and Lily M ended up on 5 N.O.  In the end though, the opposition proved a bit strong, and with the rain starting to fall quite heavily, we were eventually bowled out for 87.We finished off with a wee BBQ, thanks to some enterprising parents, and everyone went home slightly damp but pretty happy with the season overall.  We had a lot of fun, played some great cricket, and won enough games to pick up 3rd on the table.  Big Thanks must go to our Coach, Bruce, for teaching us the fundamentals of the game and being there every Wednesday evening at Practice; Helen, for being the Main Organiser of the team, letting us know who was playing, where we were playing and which opposition we would be facing; Matt, for looking after the scorebook and “herding the cats” on Saturdays; Andy, for looking after the team gear bag and supplying the gazebo, soft drinks, etc. right throughout the season; and finally the fantastic parents, who were there to cheer us on all season long
