With wind warning alerts buzzing on our phones just before heading to the field – the likelihood of a pleasant afternoon of cricket was zero. After much debate and an attempt at a combined warmup it was decided to try to play an 8-a-side T20, bowling from one end with the wind.
It was great to have Kate Hastings and Molly Dunlop join the teams, Prem players both coming back to cricket after a year off with injury. It was a shame we couldn’t make the most of this opportunity with the conditions but they both showed their class. Their running between the wickets and positive attitude was really appreciated. Kate showed everyone how to turn 2s into 3s.
We also had Grace Darnbrough and Evie Bertie join us from the Div 2 (formally U16) grade – thank you for that. This will be something we will do throughout the season – hopefully in more enjoyable conditions!
Blazers won the toss and sent the Scorchers in to bat. Edie batted with purpose and Molly was also looking good until she middled one straight into Xenia which she managed to hold on to. The team batted out the 20 overs but lost momentum, scoring 85/6. The pick of the bowlers was Kayla. Good catches by Meg, Kate and Xenia.
Blazers opened with Kate and Scarlet, and right from the start Kate meant business, putting on a good 40 run partnership with Rebecca. Kate was not out at the end, chasing down the target in 12 overs, 87/4. Lola and Phoebe were the most economical bowlers, with Millie taking 2 of the 4 wickets. Good catches by Molly and Kelly.
It wasn’t easy to do anything, the keepers India and Luce did a great job conceding very few byes. Thanks to Chris and Matt for umpiring.
