2023/24 NW Women’s Cricket Prizegiving

This years annual prizegiving was held at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at Haere-Roa, the University of Canterbury students association building. This is the first time that we have had a combined junior and senior awards evening. Special thanks to our partners New World Ilam, Cricket Express, Blackwells Mazda, Aero Cricket, Action Indoor Sports Hornby, Lifetime Group, Robbies Riccarton, UCSA, and the hardworking committee to make the evening success.

Thank you to Dixon who on short notice attended and took some great photos, Addison and Darron Stackhouse who helped with the visuals and graphics

A big thank you to New World Ilam for their ongoing support

We are very grateful to two of the clubs magicians, Gail Hotton and Nic Clayton, who helped out with our junior Div 3 and 4 awards as well as taking some questions from the floor. It is certainly not easy to be on stage but all the players really appreciated meeting them and asking some question. Peter Hay, Chairman Burnside-West Christchurch University Cricket Club was also had for the presentations

The next awards section was our Div 1 and Div 2 sides who have such a good season with some excellent players coming through and playing between both divisions especially if our Premier side had players away with representative commitments. Congratulations to all our players including our award winners Paige, Edie, Millie, Rebecca and Scarlett for Div 1 and Michaela, Hayley, and Jessica for Div 2.

The combined Southern District CC Social 8s side has an awesome season. They had not won a match in the previous year and this season they went on building on their first win and going on to win the final of the competition. Many of the players are parents who are also involved in Junior cricket and they welcomed the support of their families on the side line. Cat Quinn had a terrific season as bowler of the year and the MVP was Liz Gibson who managed to make the prizegiving after a long flight from Perth. Players Player was Kelly Reid, most improved Emma Buchanan, and batter was Maria Surrey.

Our Cricket Express Aero Scholarship winners were announced next and the $1000.00 worth of playing gear and equipment was shared with Scarlett Amos and Michaela Yoon. You read more about them here

The Premier Women had plenty of candidates for awards and Darron Stackhouse spoke of the ongoing improvement of players and the help of Garfield Charles, Sibi Walter, Michael Walding and Mark Pringle on their ongoing help with the side. This year saw the introduction of some Mai Moa and BWCUCC trophies which had been held archive some for many years.

MVP of the year was captain Maggie Martin who also collected the Player’s Player award and the John Turner Trophy for the most catches. Nicola Clayton was the coaches player and the Premier Appreciation award was awarded to Michael Walding. This is selected by the premier players.

A big thanks to Andrew Clayton who has meticulously kept the stats for the team and is on hand to remind us of upcoming milestones.

The club awards were up next and the McKerrow Cup – best performance by a new member – was presented to Rachel Wahab for her excellent bowling in her first ever match with 6 wickets – and Mark Pringle presented her with the mounted ball.

The Gardiner Cup for fielding went to Kate Hastings who provided a passion, enthusiasm and and skill. (Kate was not present to accept the award).

The service awards were presented to Mark Pringle for his service to the club, Contribution to Senior Cricket – Darron Stackhouse, contribution to Youth Cricket George Ridd, and contribution to junior cricket Theresa Buller.
